Health screenings and cooking demonstrations available
FLINT, Mich. - Health Alliance Plan (HAP) is working to make Flint a healthier place by hosting a free health fair for area residents. Families are invited to the Flint Farmer's Market located on 300 East First Street in downtown Flint on Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to obtain free wellness and healthy cooking tips, as well as free blood pressure screenings.
"People generally understand that physical activity is needed to remain healthy. However, they don't always appreciate that overall wellness involves many factors including healthy eating, mindfulness, access to healthcare to name a few," said Tom Spring, director of wellness and community relations for HAP. "This fair is designed to educate residents and give them some tools they need to stay as healthy as possible."
Chef Kristi Zebrowski will show attendees how to prepare delicious recipes that deliver a healthy kick. The Michigan Institute for Human Performance will talk about the benefits of daily exercise and invite fairgoers to participate in the "Daily Dozen," a 15 to 20 minute exercise routine designed to jumpstart the day. People with limited mobility and range of motion will enjoy the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan’s Enhanced Fitness chair exercise demonstration.
In addition, attendees can participate in discussions about complicated health topics. For example, all sides of the child vaccination debate will be explored at the "The Facts Versus the Myths" presentation by Paul E. Kilgore, M.P.H., M.D., associate professor for Wayne State University. Dr. Brenda Rogers Grays, M.D. will explain why it is important to understand the health indicators such as blood pressure, BMI and figures. Mike Jakubic of HAP will help attendees understand how to leverage health insurance plans to meet personal health goals.
Drawings for prizes will also be packed into this fun-filled day. Visit hap.org for more information or email livewell@hap.org to become a vendor or presenter.
