2026 Over-the-counter and flex benefits

Your flex benefits and healthy living rewards are combined on one convenient HAP Flex+ Rewards Visa® prepaid card. Your flex card funds will be loaded on your effective date (the first day your insurance is active). Unused balance on your card will roll over to the next month or quarter, depending on your plan. All card balances must be used by the end of the calendar year as they expire on December 31, 2026.

All information related to your flex benefit and Healthy Living Rewards is on the HAP member portal. Here’s how to get started.

How do I log in to my account?

You can log into your account from the HAP Member Portal and the HAP app.

HAP Member Portal

  • Log on to the HAP Member Portal
  • Click on My Health & Wellbeing
  • Click on Flex+ Rewards or Healthy Living Rewards
  • View your balance, review transactions and search nearby retailers

HAP Mobile App

  • Log on to the HAP Mobile App (Don’t have the app? Download it from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store)
  • Tap My Health & Wellbeing
  • Tap on Flex+ Rewards or Healthy Living Rewards
  • View your balance, review transactions and search nearby retailers

How do I activate my card?

Once you’re logged in, you can activate your card. Go to My Health & Wellbeing, then Flex+ Rewards, choose Activate card and enter the last 4 digits from the back of your Visa® Prepaid Card. Once activated, you are ready to start using your card to purchase eligible items and services.

What can I buy with my card?

You can use your card to buy approved items such as:

  • Allergy, cold and flu medications
  • First aid such as band aids or antibiotic ointment
  • Pain relievers
  • Personal care items
  • Vitamins and supplements and more

Some items are not covered, such as alcohol, tobacco, put supplies, baby items and beauty products.

Depending on your plan, you may be able to use your Flex+ Rewards card for other benefit services such as copays. Check your plan’s Evidence of Coverage to see what is covered.

How can I shop for over-the-counter items?

You can:

  • Use your card at your favorite stores including Costco, Kroger, Meijer, Walgreens, Walmart and more
  • Shop from the comfort of your home by logging into your HAP account and ordering from the online catalog. The catalog shows the most popular items, but there are many more. To see all the available products, log in to your account at hap.org/login, select Member, go to My Health & Wellbeing, and then select Flex+ Rewards.
  • Call (800) 931-7636 (TTY: 711) Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. to order from the catalog that was mailed to you

Once catalog orders are processed, most orders arrive within 1 – 4 business days.

Use of the HAP Flex+ Rewards Visa® Prepaid Card is subject to the Cardholder Agreement. This card may not be used everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. This card is issued by The Bancorp Bank, N.A., pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. No cash or ATM access.

When is money added to my card?

With your flex benefit, you’ll get a set amount added to your Flex+ Reward card every month or quarter, depending on your plan.

In addition, your Healthy Living Rewards will be added to your HAP Flex+ Rewards prepaid Visa® card. You’ll earn big rewards for doing simple, healthy things like maintaining a healthy blood pressure, completing your Annual Wellness Visit, completing screenings and more.

How do I check my card balance?

Simply log into your account to check your card balance.

What should I do if my card is lost or stolen?

If your card is lost or stolen, it’s important to report it as soon as possible. Call Customer Service at (800) 931-7636 (TTY: 711) from 8 a.m. - 11 p.m. Monday – Friday

Managing a chronic condition and using your card for healthy food

We are pleased to offer healthy food and produce* to members who have one or more chronic conditions:

  • Chronic heart failure
  • Chronic lung disorders such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension
  • Chronic and disabling mental health conditions such as bipolar disorders, major depressive disorders, paranoid disorders, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders
  • Chronic alcohol use disorder and other substance use disorders
  • Autoimmune disorders such as polyarteritis nodosa, polymyositis rheumatica, polymyositis, systematic lupus erythematosus
  • Cancer excluding pre-cancer conditions or in situ status
  • Chronic cardiovascular disorders such as cardiac arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular, chronic venous thromboembolic disorder
  • Dementia
  • Diabetes
  • Chronic gastrointestinal disease
  • Chronic kidney disease requiring dialysis or end-stage renal disease
  • Severe hematologic disorders such as aplastic anemia, hemophilia, immune thrombocytopenic, purpura, myelodysplastic syndrome, sickle-cell disease (excluding having the sickle-cell trait), chronic venous thromboembolic disorder
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Neurologic disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), epilepsy, extensive paralysis, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, polyneuropathy, spinal stenosis, stroke-related neurological deficit
  • Stroke

Eligible healthy food items, including but not limited to:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Pantry staples and healthy grains
  • Meats and seafood 

If you have one of the above conditions, please call the customer service number on the back of your HAP ID card and they will assist you in using your card for healthy food items.

HAP Medicare Complete (HMO) and HAP Medicare Complete Assist (PPO D-SNP) members

Your card will be loaded on your effective date (the first day your insurance is active). You do not need to track expenses or turn in receipts.

You can use the funds to purchase:

Brand name and generic over-the-counter (OTC) products, including but not limited to:

  • Cold medicine
  • First-aid supplies
  • Pain relievers
  • Personal Care
  • Sleep Aids
  • Vitamins & Dietary Supplements

Eligible healthy food* items, including but not limited to:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Pantry staples and healthy grains
  • Meats and seafood

Eligible home modifications*, including but not limited to:

  • Seats, stools, and benches for showering
  • Removable and/or adjustable shower heads
  • Stair lifts, widened doorways, and/or ramp installations

Eligible utilities items*, including but not limited to:

  • Water, heating and cooling
  • Electricity/gas (in addition to heating/cooling, this covers lighting and general electrical needs)
  • Trash/recycling, landline phone, internet and cable

Eligible pest control items*, including but not limited to:

  • Pest control equipment, backpack sprayers, pest control spray hoses, bed bug steamers and pest control granulators
  • Pumps and surge busters
  • Weed and landscape equipment

Fuel at the pump*

  • Fuel for your vehicle

*This benefit is a Special Supplemental Benefit for the Chronically III (SSBCI) and is made available to members with one or more qualifying chronic conditions. Not all members will qualify for this benefit. Qualifying chronic condition include, but are not limited to, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, chronic lung disorders, cancer and dementia. Over-the-counter and prepaid benefits Mastercard® for 2025

HAP Medicare Advantage members are now offered a prepaid card, otherwise known as a flex card, to use toward over-the-counter items and health-related needs. Any unused balance on your card will roll over to the next month or quarter, depending on your plan. All card balances must be used by the end of the calendar year as they expire on December 31, 2025.

How to use your flexible benefits Mastercard® prepaid card

Your flexible benefits Mastercard® prepaid card helps you buy health-related items and services. It’s easy to use. Follow these simple steps to get started.

Activate your card

Before using your card, make sure it’s activated. You can do this in two simple ways:

  1. By phone
    Call: (877) 205-8005 (TTY: 711)
  2. Online
    Visit: HAP.NationsBenefits.com/Activate

Once activated, you are ready to start using your card to purchase eligible items and services.

Your card funds will be loaded on your effective date (the first day your insurance is active).

If you didn’t receive your prepaid benefits Mastercard®, call (877) 484-7977 (TTY:711).

What can you use your card for?

Your flexible benefits Mastercard® prepaid card can be used to purchase a wide range of health-related items and services, helping you personalize your care. This includes:

  • Over-the-counter items: brand name and generic over-the-counter products including but not limited to cold medicine, first-aid supplies, pain relievers, sleep aids and vitamins.
  • Health services: Depending on your benefit plan, you may also be able to use your card to pay for certain health services including co-pay assistance*, home modifications* and healthy food items**. Check your evidence of coverage for an exact list of what your plan covers.

To ensure you’re using your benefits in the right way, you can shop for eligible products and services through the following options:

  • In-store at participating retail locations such as CVS, Kroger, Walgreens and Walmart. Please note: Meijer is temporarily unavailable. 
  • Online through the Nations Benefits Pro Portal at HAP.NationsBenefits.com
  • Over the phone with the help of a Member Experience Advisor

Ineligible items such as alcohol, tobacco, lottery tickets and more will not be approved for purchase using your card.

How to check your card balance

It's important to keep track of your available balance to ensure you’re within your spending limits. It’s also important to know that your card balance will roll over to the following month or quarter if the funds are not used.

You can check your card balance in the following ways:

  • Online: Visit the Benefits Pro Portal at HAP.NationsBenefits.com to view your balance.
  • Phone: Call (877) 484-7977 (TTY: 711) for assistance.

What should you do if your card is lost or stolen?

If your card is lost or stolen, it’s important to report it as soon as possible. You should call NationsBenefits at (877) 484-7977 (TTY: 711) immediately to report the issue. A replacement card will be sent to you within 10 business days.
