What to ask when you're sick
How to talk to your doctor and what you should be asking
Communication between you and your doctor is especially important when you’re sick. If possible, bring relative or friend to your appointment to bring up additional questions and help recall details discussed.
Information is key
The more information you have, the better. Before your visit, take a moment to write down an questions you want to ask your doctor (PDF). Ask questions such as:
- What does my diagnosis mean? Do they have literature on the condition?
- What caused the problem? How can you prevent it from reoccurring?
- Do you need additional tests? If yes, what does the doctor hope to learn?
- Do you need a prescription? If yes, what are the potential side effects and how should you handle them?
- How soon can you expect your treatment to bring relief?
- Do you need a follow-up appointment?
An important partnership
- Ask questions about your treatment and keep asking until you understand it.
- Don't suffer in silence — tell your doctor about any discomfort or side effects or if the treatment isn't working.
- Share how you feel physically and emotionally.
- Request your medical records if you want to review the information your doctor has written about your condition and treatment.
- Consider getting a second opinion If you have any concerns about your physician's diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
