Health Alliance Plan (HAP), a Michigan-based nonprofit health plan, today announced that it met with First Lady Dr. Jill Biden on March 27 for a White House roundtable to discuss critical issues surrounding cancer care and support as part of the President and First Lady’s Biden Moonshot Cancer initiative. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Charles Bloom, represented HAP, which was one of seven plans and one of two from Michigan invited to participate in the exclusive event.
“We’re proud to support this initiative to improve access to cancer navigation services across the country. As these patients and their families navigate the challenges of cancer, our attention is on improving their overall experience, including personalized assistance, care coordination support and addressing unmet social determinants of health to ensure their sole focus is on getting and staying healthy,” said Dr. Michael Genord, President and CEO, HAP. “We’re committed to removing barriers to care, and as a result improving patient outcomes and reducing overall healthcare costs.”
The Biden Cancer Moonshot is mobilizing efforts toward achieving the goals of preventing more than 4 million cancer deaths by 2047 and improving the experience of people who are touched by cancer. In an effort to do so, the initiative has set the following objectives: increase access to cancer screenings, understand and prevent toxic environmental exposure, prevent cancers before they start, drive innovation in the cancer space, and deliver it to every American and support patients and caregivers during their cancer journey.
In alignment with these objectives, HAP has pledged its support by implementing the following measures:
- Continuation of providing and covering navigation services to facilitate seamless care coordination for cancer patients and caregivers
- Capturing utilization data of navigation services across diverse patient demographics to ensure equitable access and effectiveness
- Tracking associated health outcomes to continuously assess and improve the impact of navigation services on patient care and outcomes
- Supporting best-in-class navigation services adhering to the Oncology Navigation Standards of Professional Practice, ensuring that patients and caregivers receive high-quality, evidence-based support throughout their cancer journey
“When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it not only affects them physically, but mentally as well. It’s imperative to support both aspects of the patient’s well-being," said Dr. Bloom. “As we work toward finding medical breakthroughs, it’s equally as important that we provide comprehensive care for the patient and their support network. HAP is committed to leveraging our resources and expertise to drive meaningful change in both cancer care and support.”
HAP’s involvement in the initiative reaffirms its dedication to exceptional customer service, ensuring that every member receives personalized care and support throughout their healthcare journey.
