FLINT, Mich., – Michigan-based insurer Health Alliance Plan is offering free and low-cost immunizations for school-aged children at its Summer Health and Fun Fair on Saturday, Aug. 4. Immunizations to protect children from diseases like the measles, mumps and hepatitis will be administered by the Genesee County Health Department.
The fair will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at HAP’s Flint location at 2050 S. Linden Road. Attendees will enjoy free food, carnival games, prizes and access to more than two dozen community partners. There is plenty of free onsite parking, but shuttle service from the Genesee Valley Center Mall and the Flint MTA Transfer Center will also be offered.
“Nobody wants to see their child or any of their schoolmates suffer unnecessarily from a preventable disease,” said Dr. Mike Genord, chief medical officer of HAP. “When you vaccinate your child, you’re protecting your family, and other vulnerable members of the community from potential complications that can lead to serious illness.”
Access to immunization services at the HAP fair may help parents of students attending Flint Community Schools get ready for the new year. Immunizations are required for children four to 18 years old who are attending or planning to enroll in Flint Community Schools. Parents of children in this age range can visit flintschools.org or contact (810) 767-6273 for more information. Every child that receives an immunization will receive a copy of their Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR) record which will serve as their official immunization document.
Children attending the HAP fair must have a parent or legal guardian with them to receive an immunization. Adult guardians accompanying children should bring identification, proof of their guardianship agreement and a health insurance card. Families without proof of health insurance may qualify to receive free immunizations or may be required to pay a small fee. Onsite health insurance experts will help attendees determine health insurance status.
Many onsite community partners will offer information to keep residents well. Partners include Genesee County Health Department, Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Crim Fitness Foundation, Mott Community College, University of Michigan, Kettering University, Flint Mass Transit Authority, Flint Children’s Museum, Sloan Museum, Genesee Health Plan and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and more.
Children will enjoy face painting, balloon sculptures, a DJ with a dance competition and a Double Dutch rope jumping demonstration.
