Prevent, Protect, Recover: Navigating the Flu Season

Take Control of Flu Season

The flu is a highly contagious respiratory illness that causes symptoms like fever, fatigue, coughing and sore throats. It spreads easily through the air and contaminated surfaces, so it's important that we all do our part to stay healthy this flu season.

Your Strongest Defense: Annual Vaccination

Flu viruses change from year to year, so getting your flu shot annually is important. Not only does it reduce your risk of catching the flu, but it also helps lessen symptoms if you do get sick. It takes about two weeks for your body to build immunity, so early vaccination offers the best protection.

Common Myths, Straight Facts

Let’s dispel some widespread misconceptions:

  • Flu shots do not give you the flu. The vaccine contains no live virus.
  • The flu is far more serious than a cold and can lead to complications.
  • Healthy people can still get the flu; no one is immune.
  • Good hygiene, like frequent handwashing, using masks when needed and disinfecting surfaces, help prevent the spread of illness.

If You Get Sick

Most flu cases can be treated at home with rest, plenty of fluids and over-the-counter medicine. If needed, a doctor may prescribe antiviral medication to shorten the duration and reduce severity. Keep in mind that antibiotics won’t help. The flu is caused by a virus, not bacteria.
