The Medicare ID Makeover: What You Need to Know About Your New Card

Medicare ID cards are getting a bit of a makeover to help protect Medicare members. The good news: if you have a HAP Senior Plus plan, the change won’t affect your normal doctor visit process. You’ll still show your same HAP ID card when you visit a doctor.

Here’s what you need to know:

Who?

Anyone with Medicare coverage.

What?

Will get a new Medicare Health Insurance card.

When?

Medicare members in Michigan will likely receive their new cards sometime after June 2018.

Where?

All Medicare members in the U.S. and in U.S. territories will receive a new Medicare card between April 2018 and April 2019.

Why?

Until now, Medicare members’ Social Security numbers have been displayed on their cards. To help keep that information secure and help assist in the prevention of identity theft, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is switching to custom Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) numbers. The new card will display the member’s new custom MBI.

What do I need to know if I have a HAP Medicare plan?

If you have a:

  • HAP Senior Plus Medicare Advantage plan, show your HAP ID card when you visit a doctor.
  • HAP Alliance Medicare Supplement plan, show your new Medicare Health Insurance card and your HAP Medigap card when you visit a doctor.

For more information, check out the New Medicare card resources on cms.gov.
