What Are the Most Breastfeeding-Friendly Places in Oakland County?

The Oakland County Breastfeeding Coalition recently announced its Breastfeeding-Friendly Place Awards in recognition of businesses and employers in Oakland County that provide a comfortable, convenient place for breastfeeding.

“This award rewards places that go above and beyond to offer breastfeeding-friendly spaces and help make a baby-friendly community,” said Jennifer Day, chairperson of the Oakland County Breastfeeding Coalition.

The award recipients are:

  • Business Category - The Mind Body Collective, Waterford
  • Pediatrician Office Category – Southfield Pediatric Physician
  • Employer Category – Novi Police Department

HAP was proud to be an Employer Nominee as well as a participant in the Breastfeeding-Friendly Place Awards ceremony. We now have a dedicated Lactation Room which includes a locking door, comfortable furniture and a sink. We’re dedicated to making new mothers more aware of the benefits of breastfeeding as well as promoting the usage of the Lactation Room.

“Businesses that support breastfeeding mothers are helping to develop healthy children,” said Kathy Forzley, Oakland County Health Division officer. “Breast milk is a natural first food and has all the nutrients that newborns and infants need.”

According to La Leche League, a nonprofit organization that promotes breastfeeding, breastmilk helps keep babies healthy by:

  • Supplying needed nutrients
  • Cutting the risk of diseases, infections, allergies and obesity
  • Allowing for simple digestion, with less chance of constipation, diarrhea or upset stomach

Breastfeeding also is beneficial for the mothers. They have a reduced risk of Type 2 Diabetes and breast cancer. They may find it simpler to return to their pre-pregnancy weight. Breastfeeding mothers who can pump while at work and continue to give their babies breast milk tend to miss fewer days of work than those who give their babies formula. Breastfeeding also can strengthen the bond between mother and child.
