When to enroll

If you’re newly eligible for Medicare, you can sign up for a plan during your initial enrollment period. Examples include:

  • Turning 65. You can apply up to three months before your birthday month, during your birthday month or within the three months following your birthday month. Learn more about what to do when you're turning 65.
  • A disability that qualifies you for Medicare.

Ways to enroll

There are several convenient ways to enroll in a HAP Medicare plan.


Speak with a licensed HAP Medicare sales representative. Call (800) 868-9885 (TTY: 711).
Office hours: 
8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Seven Days a Week (Oct. 1 – March 31)
8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday (April 1 - Sept. 30)

At all other times, you may access our interactive voice recording system at the same number and leave your name and phone number. A HAP Medicare sales representative will return your phone call the next business day. Please do not share personal health information when you leave your message.

You can’t enroll in an Alliance Medicare supplement plan at Alliance Medicare supplement plans help fill the gaps in Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). It gives you the peace of knowing you can get care anywhere in the U.S. from any doctor, hospital or other provider that accepts Medicare. And you can enroll any time of year.

Annual election period

Every year from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, people with Medicare can explore new plan choices. During this period, you can enroll in: 

  • HAP Senior Plus® (HMO)
  • HAP Senior Plus® Henry Ford Tiered Access® (HMO)
  • HAP Senior Plus® Medical only (HMO)
  • HAP Senior Plus® (HMO-POS)
  • HAP Senior Plus® (PPO)
  • HAP Empowered Duals (HMO SNP)
  • HAP Primary Choice Medicare (HMO)

Transition process for Medicare Part D

Medicare enrollees have a transition period to give them sufficient time to work with their doctors to ensure their drug therapies are included in our list of covered drugs, also known as a formulary. The transition period also allows time to select an alternative drug therapy or to request an exception based on medical necessity.

Special enrollment period

There are specific events that could qualify you for a special enrollment period, including loss of union-paid or employer-paid coverage or moving out of your current plan’s service area.

This special enrollment period has rules about when you can make changes and the type of changes you can make. If you believe you may qualify for a special enrollment period, you can find out more at for specific rules.
