Walking in a winter wonderland

Winter walking can be enjoyable. Whether you prefer to walk during the day or night, in the city or in the woods, the beauty of nature and the cold, crisp air will provide time to quiet the mind and exercise the body.

Follow these three important tips to stay safe while enjoying the outdoors during the winter months:

Dress for the weather

Dress for temperatures about 20 degrees warmer than they actually are because you’ll warm up as you walk. Start with a thin, breathable layer, then add a thermal layer. Finally, add a thin outer shell to help keep out the wind and cold.

Add these accessories to stay warm and dry from head to toe:

  • Wear a hat and scarf to prevent heat loss from your head.
  • Wear gloves or mittens to keep your hands and fingers warm.
  • Protect your feet with well-insulated, waterproof boots. Find a size that will accommodate thicker socks. They should be lightweight with wide, low heels and a non-slip tread.

Be visible and alert

Between shorter daylight hours and sunlight reflecting off the snow, it can be tough to see and be seen in the winter. Modify how you dress and stay alert to your surroundings by:

  • Wearing bright or reflective clothing so others can see you.
  • Wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from the bright sunlight.
  • Yielding to oncoming cars that may have difficulty stopping on icy, snow-covered streets.
  • Keeping an eye out for slippery or icy patches.

Prepare in advance to stay safe

Take a few extra precautions to stay safe while on a winter walk. These include:

  • Making sure your route is free of ice and potholes, which may be covered by snow.
  • Carrying water to prevent dehydration when walking a long distance.
  • Using non-slip floor mats in your entryways at home to prevent falls.

If you take a little extra time to prepare, you can safely enjoy a winter walk. Enjoy the crisp, cool air!
