Caffeine awareness

Many of us start the morning with a cup of coffee or (or three, or four), a soda or an energy drink. But is caffeine safe or healthy? Here are some fast facts about caffeine:

  • An average cup of coffee (8 oz.) has 80 to 100 mg caffeine
  • Contrary to popular belief, caffeine does not reverse or negate the effects of alcohol
  • Caffeine is a drug, and it’s addictive
  • Caffeine can be found in numerous items, such as soft drinks, chocolate, diet pills and pain relievers
  • Moderate caffeine consumption is considered to be about 400 mg a day, which is equal to three cups of coffee
  • The effects of caffeine can be felt within five minutes of ingestion and can last up to eight hours

How much caffeine are you consuming?

Ingesting too much caffeine can cause restlessness, hand tremors, headache, nausea, heartburn and a fast or irregular heart rate. Caffeine before bedtime can adversely affect sleep quality and interfere with normal sleep patterns.

It’s important to be careful with energy drinks. The caffeine content can vary between 50 mg to more than 500 mg per serving. Some energy drinks contain as much caffeine as 14 cans of Coca-Cola, and the caffeine amounts are not on the label.
