2014

Tica B. Davis Honored as Woman of Excellence
The Michigan Chronicle selected Tica Davis, Manager, HAP Preferred Operations and Chairperson, Diversity Council, as a "Woman of Excellence" for proven success within her industry. Davis began her career at HAP almost 18 years ago as a mail clerk. Throughout her tenure at HAP, she has pursued advancement opportunities and today is the manager of Preferred Operations. Davis continues to provide assistance to several internal support departments as well as various physicians and hospitals in HAP's provider community. Currently she is pursuing her Master's Degree in Health Services Administration through Central Michigan University.

Jerome B. Brown and Elgin Cooper Honored as Men of Excellence
The Michigan Chronicle selected Jerome B. Brown and Elgin Cooper as two of the region's 2014 "Men of Excellence." Brown is the director of HAP's Call Center and Cooper is the Director of HAP's Corporate Program Management office. Both were chosen for this honor for proven successes within their profession; serving as positive role models whose contributions encourage others; and for achievements and participation in community service. Brown has served in several leadership roles at his church including chairman of finance and is on the board of the historic Boston-Edison Neighborhood Association. Cooper has been actively involved in creating a mentoring culture within his department at HAP. In addition, he has developed several informal mentoring relationships across the organization and business units within the Henry Ford Health System. He also participates in several school-related activities with his children.

HAP ranks highest in J.D. Power Member Satisfaction Study for Seventh Consecutive Year
Once again, our members rated HAP "Highest in Member Satisfaction among Commercial Health Plans in Michigan," according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2014 U.S. Member Health Insurance StudySM. HAP ranked highest in overall member experience and continues to deliver the highest member satisfaction in Michigan. HAP excelled in the following study areas: Member Communications; Quality of Coverage, Customer Service and Cost.

HAP Receives Tribute from National Kidney Foundation of Michigan
Health Alliance Plan was honored with a tribute from the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan for the company's wellness programs and addressing social, economic and educational issues that affect the health and wellbeing of Michigan residents. Specifically for our sponsorship of several community-based programs including Enhance Fitness, a free physical activity program aimed at improving the functional fitness and wellbeing of older adults; water aerobics classes in partnership with community centers; and wellness programs for youth. HAP-sponsored community outreach programs reach more than 30,000 people each year. The tribute was presented by State Senator Vincent Gregory at the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan's 2014 Diabetes and Kidney Advocacy Day in May.

2013

Rachel Powell Named Volunteer of the Year
Rachel Powell, Director of Medicare Advantage Revenue Management, was recently named Volunteer of the Year by Leadership Troy for her work with the Boys and Girls Club of Troy. Leadership Troy consists of representatives from various community organizations, businesses, and individuals that strive to promote Troy community improvement programs, the exchange of community information, and provide a venue to recognize volunteers and corporate citizens that positively impact the quality of life in Troy. Rachel was recognized during the Community Awards Banquet held in November.

HAP Leaders Complete Leadership Programs
Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Mary Ann Tournoux recently joined 67 executives from across the region as graduates of the Detroit Regional Chamber's Leadership Detroit program, a 10-month leadership program designed to challenge emerging and existing community leaders from Southeast Michigan to bring about positive change.

Vice President of Corporate Strategic Planning Joel Keiper, Director of Coordinated Behavioral Health Management Mary Clare Solky and Manager of Market Intelligence Research Kristy Waddell are among the 53 people who successfully completed the Leadership Oakland Cornerstone Program as part of the class of LOXXlll, a nine-month program aimed at developing leadership skills, exploring key issues impacting the region, and enabling participants to reach their full potential professionally, personally and in their community.

Director of Health Management Services Jody Doherty is among 40 who recently graduated as part of Leadership Macomb Class XVI. The nine-month program brings together leaders from numerous institutions, disciplines and geographic areas to strengthen their leadership skills, develop long-term business relationships, and obtain in depth information about Macomb County.

Michelle Howard Earns National Recognition
Michelle Howard, Director of Producer Relations for the Business Development and Consumer Solutions Department, is the immediate Past President of the Metro Detroit Association of Health Underwriters (MDAHU). She was recently recognized for her recruitment efforts while serving as President and received a Presidential Citation and the Recruiter of the Year award at the recent National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) 19th annual awards ceremony. Howard was the highest recruiter in the nation having brought in 60 members to the MDAHU.

Under Howard's leadership, the MDAHU had the most new members, the highest growth rate and the highest overall membership for a local chapter. The Michigan Association of Health Underwriters (MAHU) earned the awards for highest growth rate and highest overall membership growth for a state chapter. MAHU also won the Blue Ribbon of Excellence award which is presented to state chapters who, along with all their local chapters, qualified for silver, gold or platinum certification.

Along with now serving as Immediate Past President, Howard is also Membership Chair for the Michigan State Board of the Association of Health Underwriters and the NAHU Region III Retention Chair.

Gold Aster Award
Health Alliance Plan received a Gold Aster Award for HAP's Cook eKitchen®, a collection of fun and educational healthy recipes and how-to videos on hap.org that are available to members and the community. Cook eKitchen® web content supports our children's health initiatives. We were nominated for this award by Baldwin Publishing, our content provider for Cook eKitchen®

The Aster Awards are a medical marketing awards program that allows healthcare organizations and advertising agencies to compete against similarly sized competitors from across the nation and world. Winning entries are published in the Marketing Healthcare Today magazine. The Aster Awards are hosted by Creative Images, Inc., an internationally recognized firm that has specialized in strategic healthcare marketing for more than 20 years.

Irita Matthews Honored as Woman of Excellence
The Michigan Chronicle selected Irita Matthews, vice president, associate general counsel and assistant secretary, HAP Board of Directors as a 2013 "Woman of Excellence" for her proven success within the legal industry. Matthews' areas of expertise include health insurance law, governance and regulatory compliance. She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Michigan Health Executive Group Association, and Delta Sigma Theta sorority. She was recently appointed by Governor Rick Snyder to the Michigan Health Information Technology Commission.

Vernal Brand Honored as Woman of Excellence
The Michigan Chronicle selected Vernal Brand, PhD, MSA, BSN, RN, CHCQM, associate vice president, Quality and Disease Management as a 2013 "Woman of Excellence" for serving as a positive role model whose contributions encourage others. Dr. Brand leads HAP's patient safety, quality and performance monitoring activities, including National Committee for Quality Assurance accreditation. She's a member of the American Psychological Association PSI CHI Honors Society and is certified by the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians, Inc.

2012

Leonard G. Doak Health Literacy Innovator Award
Health Alliance Plan's "Understanding Blood Pressure" workbook was selected as the 2012 ReadsEasy Publication 3rd Place finisher in the Leonard G. Doak Health Literacy Innovator Award contest. The award honors excellence in health literacy in printed information for consumers. An easy-to-use companion piece for HAP's "Managing High Blood Pressure" worksite wellness program, the Understanding Blood Pressure workbook was designed to educate and empower participants to control their blood pressure during worksite sessions and at home to continue on the path to good health after the program ends. The Health Literacy Innovator Awards are sponsored by Health Literacy Innovations.

DeAndre Lipscomb Honored as Man of Excellence
The Michigan Chronicle selected DeAndre Lipscomb, vice president, Community Outreach as one of the region's "Men of Excellence" for inspiring others through his vision and leadership, exceptional achievements and participation in community service. Lipscomb is a Wayne State University graduate and serves as vice president of the board of directors for Spaulding for Children and board member for Winning Futures.

DeAndre Lipscomb Selected as YMCA Minority Achiever
DeAndre Lipscomb, vice president, Community Outreach was selected to serve in the esteemed 2012 YMCA Achiever Class. The YMCA Minority Achiever program connects minority teens with working professionals who share similar cultural backgrounds. Corporations nominate stellar employees to contribute their time and talents to support the YMCA with this youth development work. Lipscomb is a Wayne State University graduate and serves as vice president of the board of directors for Spaulding for Children and board member for Winning Futures.

2011

eHealthcare Leadership Award
hap.org received a Gold award in the Best Site Design category for HMO/PPO/Other Insurers at the 2011 eHealthcare Leadership Awards in Orlando, Florida. Winners were selected from nearly 1,200 entries. "Despite the challenging economic environment, organizations have continued to explore and invest in digital communications," says Mark Gothberg, eHealthcare Leadership Awards chairman. "A significant number of organizations have made major improvements in their websites, expanded involvement in social media, more fully integrated traditional marketing with new media vehicles, and initiated mobile efforts to better serve current and future customers."

Web Health Awards
HAP's eWise Woman - Health tips for women on the go newsletter received a Merit award in the E-Newsletter category of the 13th annual Web Health AwardsSM. Sponsored by The Health Information Resource CenterSM, the Web Health Awards honor the nation's best digital health resources, including blog, e-newsletter, interactive content, mobile application, social network, video, and website. A panel of 39 experts in digital health media served as judges and selected winners from among more than 500 entries.

Macomb Foundation Honors Jamie Spriet with ATHENA Award
The Macomb Foundation - a sister organization of the Macomb County Chamber - honored Jamie Spriet, vice president, Business Development at HAP with the 2011 ATHENA Award. Honored for her leadership in bringing affordable insurance to businesses of one to 20,000 employees, Spriet is also known as a strong advocate for the promotion of women into executive positions and higher education and a champion for community causes.

Case in Point Platinum Award for Nurse Health Coaching
HAP received a 2011 Case in Point Platinum Award (category: Disease Management/Population Health) in honor of the nurse health coaching component of HAP's comprehensive disease management program. The Case in Point Awards recognize the most successful and innovative case management programs working to improve health care across the care continuum. HAP's in-house team of nurse health coaches consists of 28 registered nurses, including certified case managers and diabetes educators, adding value to a highly experienced group of nurse health coaches. In 2009, HAP embarked on several strategies to improve diabetes-related HEDIS© rates and clinical outcomes, and reduce medical costs. The awards were presented on May 10, 2011 at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Southfield Business of the Year
The Southfield Area Chamber of Commerce honored HAP as the 2011 Large Business of the Year in recognition of HAP's extraordinary business activity, dedication to the Chamber and significant contribution to the economic vitality and well-being of the Southfield community. HAP sponsors free Senior Splash Bash & Moms in Motion water aerobics, and supports Count Your Steps, Let's Move! Southfield Summer Youth Fitness Camp, Oakland Schools Homeless Student Education Program, Orchards Children's Services, and the Southfield Farmer's Market. As a business partner, HAP provides realistic solutions to tackling health care costs and innovative programs and products that will improve employees' health and reduce costs. Examples include the "Power Package" of value-based benefits for small to mid-sized businesses and customized worksite wellness programs for Southfield employers.


2010

Excellent Accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance
HAP received "Excellent" accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for the past three surveys for our Commercial and Medicare HMO. After a detailed review, NQCA noted the following strengths: Collaborative, multi-disciplinary organizational culture focused on quality and member service; strong case management and disease management programs and patient-focused, innovative wellness initiatives.

2010 Best in Class Innovator's Award (Bronze) for Member Health Reminder
The Eighth Annual Greystone.Net and StayWell Custom Communications showcase the finest in hospital and health care system Web site content and functionality. Selected from nearly 140 entries, HAP's Member Health Reminder (MHR) application received a Bronze Innovator's Award. MHR helps members know when it's time for a checkup with their doctor or when a preventive screening is due. Members who also have chronic diseases like heart failure, asthma or diabetes also see disease specific reminders when a procedure is due.

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for African American Initiative for Male Health Improvement (Phase II)
Racial and ethnic minorities are less likely than whites to receive preventive services, even if they're covered by health insurance. To close this gap among insured African American men, HAP and Henry Ford Health System hosted a culturally-tailored event with health screenings, presentations, consultations with dieticians and incentives for attending and completing a follow-up appointment. As a result of this program, 200 African American men are more up-to-date on preventive health screenings. Potential health problems like abnormal glucose and cholesterol levels and hypertension were detected. Participants now understand the importance of preventive care, and a staggering 75 percent of them followed up with their physicians.

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for Effective Pain Management Initiative
HAP identified safety concerns and improved the coordination of care for members suffering from chronic pain. HAP's integrated approach utilized pharmacy claims data, and input from coordinated behavioral health and clinical care experts to identify "red flags" and help physicians select the best intervention for their patients based on patient need. After two years, 70 percent of pain management safety concerns were resolved; 80 percent of the target population showed improvement in the coordination of their care; emergency room visits decreased by 50 percent, opioid prescriptions decreased by 49 percent and opioid prescription costs decreased by 46 percent.

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for Changing Behavior in Diabetes Self-Management
Proper management of diabetes requires adherence to screening guidelines by both medical staff and patients. Specially trained nurse health coaches in HAP's HealthTrack program helped members who were ambivalent or resistant to change. Mailings and incentives kept members informed and actively participating in their health. A partnership with the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan and Personal Action Toward Health (PATH) program formed a solid support network for members with diabetes. These interventions not only improved blood sugar and cholesterol testing and control, they reduced the need for diabetes-related hospital admissions, emergency room visits and ancillary services as members became healthier.

Best Practices in Health Care Consumer Empowerment and Protection
HAP's Medication Therapy Management Program (MTMP) was selected as one of 30 finalists for the Best Practices in Health Care Consumer Empowerment and Protection Awards by URAC, the nation's leading accreditation organization. URAC will honor the finalists during their October 5-7, 2010 in Chicago, IL. HAP's MTMP was selected by a distinguished panel of judges out of entries from across the nation. "The Annual Quality Summit provides a unique opportunity for leaders in health care to learn what premier companies are doing to advance consumer protection and empowerment," said Alan P. Spielman, president and chief executive officer of URAC.

Macomb County Chamber Honors HAP Leaders
Don Kiefiuk, HAP vice president, was installed to serve as the chair of the Board of Directors of the Macomb County Chamber as it begins its 118th year. Jamie Spriet, HAP vice president, was honored as Member of the Year for "astounding service" on the Marketing and Programs Committee and sponsorship of several Macomb County Chamber and Foundation events. Macomb County Chamber's mission is to create a positive and sustainable business environment throughout Macomb County. Through volunteerism, civic organization partnerships and community initiatives, HAP is addressing the social, economic and educational issues that affect the health of the communities we serve. HAP's rich culture of community stewardship begins at the top with a team of executives who serve on boards for a wide variety of organizations and community groups.


2009

"Highest in Member Satisfaction"
For the second consecutive year, HAP ranked "Highest in Member Satisfaction among Commercial Health Plans in Michigan," in the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 National Health Insurance Plan Study. It is an honor for HAP to receive this award for a second year. The study measures seven key drivers of satisfaction within the members' overall health plan experience: Coverage and Benefits; Provider Choice; Information and Communication; Claims Processing; Statements; Customer Service; and Approval Processes.*

 

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for HAP's In-Home Care Program
Caring for a seriously ill loved one can be a full-time job for family members. HAP's In-Home Care Program (HIHCP) eases the round-the-clock responsibilities for family caregivers by providing in-home care at no extra cost to members facing serious, complex illnesses. In partnership with Henry Ford Community Care Services, @Home Support and St. John Home Care, HIHCP prevents and relieves suffering and improves members' quality of life through physician and nursing visits, spiritual care, nutritional counseling, social services and in-home health aides as patient and family needs change. The program reduces the need for hospitalization and emergency visits while helping patients gently transition into the next phase of their illness.

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for Improving Antidepressant Medication Compliance with Informed Decision-Making
Depression is one of the most difficult chronic conditions to treat. Patients diagnosed with depression are more likely to recover when they receive appropriate, timely follow-up care and take their antidepressant medication. HAP has increased adherence to depression treatment plans through extensive outreach to members and their health care providers, offering a 90-day refill option on antidepressant medications, and intervening quickly when members do not refill their medication. Members save money as a result of the discounted medication co-pay, and participants have reported an improvement in work attendance and productivity.

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for Senior Splash Bash & Moms in Motion Free Community Water Aerobics
After learning that certain populations within Detroit were not taking advantage of available aquatic recreational opportunities, HAP took action, launching a free water aerobics program at four Detroit recreation centers. Built around the proven health benefits of water aerobics, HAP's Senior Splash Bash & Moms in Motion program has expanded to 18 sites in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Genesee counties and has an average annual attendance of 2,640 adults. The program provides new resources to struggling recreation programs while creating opportunities in other communities. In February 2009, Clinton Township reported a 400 percent increase in attendance by seniors during its HAP-sponsored sessions.

2009 National Health Information Award
The HAP Weight Wise Participant Guide received a Silver Award in the 2009 National Health Information Awards. In its 16th year, the National Health Information Awards program honors high-quality consumer information. The awards program is organized by the Health Information resource Center, a national clearinghouse for consumer health programs and materials. A panel of health information experts judges entries based on content, format, success in reaching the target audience and overall quality.

National Mature Media Award
HAP's 2009 Prime Time Living Calendar received a Merit Award from the National Mature Media Awards -- the largest program of it's kind to recognize the nation's best advertising, marketing and educational materials produced for older adults. National sponsors include The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, the leading voice on aging issues for Area Agencies on Aging. Senior marketing and communication experts judge entries based on content, format, success in reaching the target audience and overall quality.

The Michigan Chronicle selected Maurice McMurray, senior vice president and general counsel, and Ron Stallworth, associate general counsel and vice president, Legislative Affairs as "Men of Excellence" who motivate and inspire others through their vision and leadership, exceptional achievements, and participation in community service.

AHIP Foundation 2009 Community Leadership Awards
HAP's Senior Splash Bash & Moms in Motion water aerobics program received an Honorable Mention by the America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) Foundation. This annual program pays tribute to health plans demonstrating excellence in community outreach by identifying a specific problem in the community, establishing creative approaches to address the problem, and successfully leading community partnerships toward collaborative solutions. Each year, HAP's Senior Splash Bash & Moms in Motion classes reach an average of 2,640 adults, with an average daily attendance of 271 participants. Classes are free and open to the general public.

Chrystal Roberts Named Woman of Excellence by The Michigan Chronicle
HAP's director of Community Relations was honored as one of 50 "Women of Excellence" -- female executives, business owners and community leaders with proven success in their profession and industry, who encourage others through their contributions and are active in community service endeavors.

2008

Top-Ranked Medicare HMO Plan in Michigan and Top 25 in U.S.
HAP's Medicare HMO is the top-ranked Medicare HMO plan in Michigan, according to the list of America's Best Health Plans in the November 17-24 issue of U.S. News & World Report. HAP Senior Plus was ranked 24 among 216 Medicare health plans nationwide in customer service, preventive services and treating illness. HAP's commercial HMO is also one of America's Best Health Plans, with a ranking of 38 out of 245. The America's Best Health Plans list was created by the U.S. News Media Group, in collaboration with the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

Hospice Of Michigan Crystal Rose Award: Outstanding Community Partner
HAP's In-Home Care program was honored for partnering with Hospice of Michigan to pioneer innovative health care options for those suffering with chronic illness. The award was presented at the 2008 Crystal Rose Ball in Dearborn. The HAP In-Home Care program provides in-home care at no extra cost to members facing serious, complex chronic illnesses. It prevents and relieves suffering, improves quality of life and eases the round-the-clock responsibilities for family caregivers.

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for HAP's HealthTrack: A High-Tech, High-Touch Approach to Chronic Kidney Disease Management
The program targets members with diabetes and hypertension to identify high-risk members, increase screening, provide health coaching and offer resources to members and their physicians to help them manage their chronic kidney disease and prevent serious complications. The Pinnacle Awards were established in 2001 to recognize innovation in Michigan managed care and recognize the dedicated individuals who are committed to improving the health of their members and their communities. The panel of judges represented health care, government, small business and the media.

In July 2007, HAP partnered with these two established weight management programs to reduce the costs associated with weight loss programs and empower members to eat smart, keep moving and stay healthy for a lifetime. The Pinnacle Awards were established in 2001 to recognize innovation in Michigan managed care and recognize the dedicated individuals who are committed to improving the health of their members and their communities. The panel of judges represent health care, government, small business and the media.

National Kidney Foundation of Michigan 2008 Innovations in Health Care Award
At its 10th Annual Champion of Hope Tribute Dinner, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan honored HAP for improving the lives of Michigan residents with diabetes, kidney and cardiovascular disease. HAP's HealthTrack, a high-tech, high-touch program identifies chronic kidney disease early in patients with diabetes and hypertension, the two leading causes of kidney disease. Nurse case managers help these members set goals, learn more about their conditions, get essential tests, medication, specialty care and greater self-motivation to manage their disease.

National Safe-Rx Award for e-Prescribing
The Safe-Rx award is presented annually by SureScripts, representing the nation's community pharmacies. States are ranked by the number of prescriptions routed electronically as a percentage of the total number of prescriptions eligible for electronic routing. Michigan's ranking jumped from tenth to fifth, due in large part to the successful partnership between HAP and the 800-physician Henry Ford Medical Group. Michigan Quality Award
The Michigan Quality Council awarded HFHS and HAP the "2007 Quality Leadership Award," the highest honor for organizational performance in the state -- Michigan's version of the Baldrige Award. All HFHS business units, including HAP, participated in site visits. The application process for the national Baldrige Award is a multi-year journey, so to get a state level site visit and an award on our first try is truly an accomplishment and acknowledgement of our hard work.

NCQA Recognizing Innovation in Multicultural Health Care
HAP was one of nine health plans nationally to receive a "Recognizing Innovation in Multicultural Health Care" award from NCQA for our Addressing Disparities in Breast Cancer Screening Initiative. A coordinated outreach program completely eliminated the disparity between Caucasian and African American women in getting timely mammograms.

Area Agency on Aging Corporate/Business Leadership Award
HAP received the AAA 1-B Corporate/Business Leadership Award for HAP's HealthTrack Chronic Care Management Program in recognition for improving the quality of life of older adults through the integration of disease management and community support in partnership with the AAA 1-B. Community support included prescription assistance programs, assisted transportation, homemaking and personal care services in the home, and personal emergency response equipment. The partnership was a result of a federal grant opportunity through the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Administration on Aging provided participating seniors with tools and services to improve their health and maintain their independence.
