HAP's Boots for Kids Keeps Needy Children Warm This Winter
Boots and Donations Still Needed for Flint, Saginaw and Bay City Kids
Flint - February 29, 2016 - There is only one month left to help keep kids warm this winter with HAP's Boots for Kids program, which will collect boots for children in need through March 31. The need for boots is ongoing, with over 1,000 pairs of boots requested and delivered to nine shelters and agencies in the Flint, Saginaw and Bay City areas so far this season.
New boots of any size can be donated at any of the 12 local health insurance agencies, businesses, retailers and churches in the Flint, Saginaw and Bay City areas that display a HAP's Boots for Kids-branded box.
Flint's Catholic Charities of Shiawassee & Genesee Counties was a recipient of more than 50 pairs of boots. "We can't possibly thank HAP's Boots for Kids program enough for the boots we receive at our Center for Hope Community Closet," said Catholic Charities of Shiawassee & Genesee Counties President and CEO Vicky Schultz. "Our supply of boots this year has been particularly low, and winter isn't over. There is nothing as gratifying as seeing the smile on the face of a child wearing new boots. For many, it is the first pair of new boots they've owned."
Shelley Ramos, volunteer services manager for Bay Area Women's Center in Bay City, knows first-hand how boots help the shelter.
"Being able to provide boots for children not only helps keep their feet warm, it also gives them hope in knowing that there are people who care," Ramos said. "When a child is given a new pair of boots, their eyes are filled with happiness and for a moment their worries are forgotten."
HAP's Boots for Kids kicked off in January, and the program is in need of boots and donations to support kids through the rest of winter.
Monetary donations to purchase new boots may be made at collection sites as well as online at www.hap.org/bootsforkids. Checks should be made payable to "Priority Children/HAP's Boots for Kids" and can be mailed to 902 East Sixth Street, Flint, MI 48503. Priority Children acts as the fiduciary for HAP's Boots for Kids.
Since the program began in 2008, HAP's Boots for Kids has provided new boots to more than 3,000 children at shelters and community agencies throughout Genesee, Saginaw, Bay, Lapeer and St. Clair counties.
