Update on State of Michigan Decision to Allow Insurers to Reinstate Cancelled Policies
November 25, 2013 – Following President Obama's recent press conference about Americans receiving insurance cancellation notices, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) Director announced on November 22 that Michigan is allowing health insurers the option to reinstate 2013 policies that were to be discontinued in 2014 due to non-compliance with provisions in the Affordable Care Act.
HAP already offered early renewal options to Personal Alliance members and small groups to extend coverage in their existing plans into 2014. The vast majority of these customers elected this option.
For the fewer than 1,000 members (less than 0.2 percent of our entire book of business) who received a 2014 cancellation notice from HAP, we are not going to reinstate those policies. Many of these members will find more affordable and comprehensive options among the 2014 ACA-compliant plans. We will help guide them through their options to choose a new plan that meets their unique needs.
Deadline extended for enrolling in coverage that starts on January 1, 2014
The deadline for enrolling in a health plan for coverage that starts on Jan. 1, 2014 has been extended from December 15 to December 23, 2013. Payment for the first month's premium must be received prior to the Jan. 1, 2014 effective date.
