Health Alliance Plan Thanks Community Partners for the Gift of Warm Feet

Flint – June 14, 2012 –The mild winter weather didn't stop local residents and businesses from generously supporting the annual "Boots for Kids" program sponsored by Health Alliance Plan (HAP).

"Thanks to the generosity of more than 30 community partners across Bay, Genesee, Huron, Lapeer, Saginaw and St. Clair counties, we were able to serve more than 680 children who utilize our local shelters," said Anita Moliterno, general manager, HAP's East Central regional office. "For many of these children, this was the first pair of warm winter boots they had ever owned."

HAP wishes to thank the following community partners who went above and beyond to support this program in 2011:

  • Top boot collectors Ron Graham, licensed insurance agent at Valley United Insurance of Bay City and Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, who collected a total of 116 pairs;
  • Top cash sponsor Michigan Sugar Company of Bay City, who donated $1,000;
  • Tom Matzmarowski, assistant store manager, and his team at Kohl's in Grand Blanc, who provided a significant discount on boots purchased for Boots for Kids; and
  • Meijer stores in Fort Gratiot, Lapeer, Davison and Flint (Hill Road location) for their generous cash donations.

Boots for Kids also inspired "The Boot Brigade," a group of seventh- and eighth-grade students from St. Joseph School in Lake Orion, Michigan to start their own local boot drive. The team collected an additional 175 pairs of boots for the Department of Human Services in Tuscola, Genesee, Lapeer, and Oakland counties. As a result of their creative approach and outstanding results, team members Sarah Falkowski, Joy Fullerton, Michael Ignagni, Ricky Johnson and Olivia Packard qualified to attend the Global Finals competition of the international Destination ImagiNation program in May at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

"On behalf of Health Alliance Plan and all of the children who received new boots, we want to extend a huge thank you to our community for helping us to give the gift of warm feet to local kids," said Valerie Welch, Regional Operations Administrator.
