Fighting Childhood Obesity, One Recipe at a Time!

Health Alliance Plan launches Cook eKitchen™ web cooking program for families to celebrate National Nutrition Month

DETROIT – March 6, 2012 – From PB and J Muffins to Pasta Alfredo and Mini Chicken Tacos, families across Michigan can now access dozens of free scrumptious, nutritious and easy-to-prepare recipes for snacks and meals through the Cook eKitchen™ Link Opens in a New Window web-based cooking video program from Health Alliance Plan (HAP).

Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Overweight children are more likely to have risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and are more likely to suffer from conditions such as pre-diabetes.

As the only Michigan health plan to offer the Cook eKitchen program produced by Baldwin Publishing, HAP encourages families with children aged 8 to 14 to take advantage of Cook eKitchen's educational and entertaining content to help them cultivate healthy eating habits to last a lifetime.

"Childhood obesity is threatening the health and well-being of our communities, and we're excited to introduce this wonderful, engaging resource to our youngest community members," said Terri Kachadurian, Director, Worksite Health and Wellness Programs. "Cook eKitchen complements other initiatives that HAP has launched over the years to help families live healthier lives, such as Ready, Set, Cook – our after-school cooking program for children – and the inspirational HAP Family Challenge."

"My daughter Taima is always asking to cook something. She collects all kinds of cookbooks and always wants to try new recipes. I don't often have the time to work alongside her, so this web resource has been great for her," said Colleen Ezzeddine, a Farmington Hills, Michigan mother of three children ages 5 to 9. "I don't have to worry about what kinds of recipes she'll find because they're all fairly nutritious. And she enjoys being able to make the meals or snacks by herself."

Taima, age 9, said: "I loved making the Chocolate Peanut Butter Bites because they were so good and easy to make. I love peanut butter cups and these were just as good, only healthier. The best part was that they were no-bake. They were a little time-consuming to make but so totally worth it."

Along with healthy twists on favorites like oatmeal raisin cookies, brownies and chicken parmesan, Cook eKitchen features videos of young chefs demonstrating featured recipes as well as useful tricks for food preparation, such as slicing up sweet potatoes to make delectable fries (no guilt involved!) and whipping up buttermilk. The website also promotes the 5-2-1-0 winning formula from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which HAP endorses. The simple message for kids is: eat 5 fruits and vegetables daily, have 2 hours or less screen time (TV, videos and computer), get 1 hour physical activity a day and consume 0 sweet drinks.

HAP's Wise Woman Advisory Council got a sneak peak of Cook eKitchen at the pre-testing stage and participants described it as 'incredibly easy', 'user-friendly' and 'inspiring'. "Noting 'Heart Healthy Recipes/Diabetes Recipe/Gluten Free Recipe' under the recipe heading is GENIUS...I would look for these cues for recipes that would be most helpful to my health needs," said one user. "The quality of the cooking videos is excellent! They are colorful, easy to follow, upbeat, and exciting," said another.

Cook eKitchen is hosted at Link Opens in a New Window and is available to everyone – not just HAP members.

National Nutrition Month® is observed each March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The theme for March 2012 is "Get Your Plate in Shape." The campaign focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
