HAP Celebrates 50th Anniversary with "Happy Together" Summer Fest and Retro Recipe Redo Contest
DETROIT -- July 6, 2011 -- Health Alliance Plan (HAP) is celebrating 50 years of improving health and enhancing lives with the theme "Proud of our Past. Prepared for the Future." HAP is inviting the community to help commemorate this milestone with free "Happy Together" Summer Fest events and a Retro Recipe Redo contest that will challenge the community to give favorite family recipes a healthy makeover.
HAP was founded by UAW President Walter Reuther under the name Community Health Association (CHA). For Reuther, CHA fulfilled his dream of providing access to a comprehensive medical care program that would improve the health of industrial workers.
"At the heart of CHA was the core value of preventive care -- a principal that still guides HAP to this day as we've grown beyond offering one HMO product into a sophisticated health plan that continues to make a significant contribution to the health and well-being of nearly 500,000 members in this region," said William Alvin, HAP president and CEO. "We are grateful for the long-standing, tremendous support of loyal customers, members and community partners, many of whom have been with HAP throughout our entire 50 year history."

Retro Recipe Redo Contest: Give Grandma's Recipe a Healthy Makeover
Home cooks and foodies from southeast Michigan are invited to enter the Retro Recipe Redo contest. The challenge is to take a family favorite recipe and transform it into a healthy, delicious dish that's easy to prepare. Semi-finalists will be invited to share their Retro Recipe Redo dish with HAP's panel of judges at the Happy Together Summer Fest. Prizes include a private dinner prepared by a professional chef, fitness discounts, private cooking classes and more.
"The contest fits with our 'Proud of our Past, Prepared for the Future' 50th anniversary theme by taking popular recipes from the past and creating a more nutritious version that future generations can enjoy as part of a healthy lifestyle," said Alvin. "True to our mission of enhancing the health and well-being of the lives we touch, the Retro Recipe Redo contest and Happy Together Summer Fest activities demonstrate HAP's commitment to providing tools and resources to the community that will inspire all of us to live a healthy lifestyle."
