Who Says Getting Older Means Slowing Down? Macomb County Seniors Swing the Night Away at HAP-Sponsored Dances

DETROIT – November 17, 2008 – Hundreds of Macomb County seniors have found a swing in their step and a song in their heart at the Senior Swing Society of Macomb County Dances at the Italian American Cultural Society in Clinton Township. The program is sponsored by Health Alliance Plan (HAP) and Henry Ford Macomb Hospitals.

Twice a month, more than 200 seniors gather to socialize and dance to live music provided by the Tommy James Band on Wednesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Upcoming dances will take place on Wednesday, November 19 and December 17. Admission is free. Pre-registration is not required.

Former Macomb County Commissioner Jim Perna took over the program after its founder, the late County Commissioner Ralph Liberado, passed away. Perna is amazed at the great turnout from seniors of all ages – including those in their 90s – who come from all over the county, even in bus loads from nursing homes.

"I commend Health Alliance Plan and Henry Ford Macomb Hospital for their financial assistance and sponsorship in keeping this program going," Perna said. "It gives me great satisfaction that this program is continuing, that it gives our seniors the opportunity for socialization and camaraderie, not to mention the physical therapy of dancing and exercise."

HAP's sponsorship is an example of the non-profit health plan's commitment to helping seniors live a healthier lifestyle, manage their chronic conditions and access free or low-cost programs in their community.

"If older adults become less active they can lose their endurance, strength, balance and flexibility," said Karen Wintringham, vice president, Medicare and Public Sector Programs. "Fortunately, it's never too late to make simple lifestyle changes that can improve their health and quality of life."

Through HAP's signature programs like Senior Splash Bash water aerobics and HAP Weight WiseSM, area seniors can find the support and encouragement they need to stay active, control their weight and age the healthy way. HAP also offers a Flexible Health Options benefit that reimburses its Medicare Advantage (HAP Senior Plus and Alliance Medicare PPO) members up to monthly (0 annually) toward the cost of fitness activities such as swimming and yoga, weight management programs such as Weight Watchers®, acupuncture, or chiropractic services not otherwise covered by Medicare.
