Health Alliance Plan Announces Unprecedented Weight Management Program and New Partnership with Weight Watchers®
Program extends weight management opportunity to HAP HMO members
SOUTHFIELD – June 14, 2007 – Health Alliance Plan (HAP) and Weight Watchers® today announced a partnership that gives unprecedented access to weight management services and support to HAP’s HMO members.
“HAP is an innovator in prevention and wellness programs. We routinely survey our members, and they’ve told us that losing weight is their number one health concern,” said Mary Beth Bolton M.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Health Alliance Plan. “By partnering with proven programs such as Weight Watchers, HAP is making it easier for members to eat smart, keep moving and stay healthy for a lifetime.”
At the press conference held today at HAP’s Southfield office, HAP announced its new weight management program, a comprehensive portfolio of healthy lifestyle and weight management tools and resources.
The Weight Watchers partnership is a key component of this new program that goes beyond the simple discounts offered by other health plans. Beginning July 1, HAP HMO plan members can join a Weight Watchers12-week session for just $25, as opposed to the regular $180 cost, and HAP will pay the entire balance.
“This unprecedented $25 offer demonstrates how serious HAP is about promoting healthy lifestyle change,” said Bolton.
Florine Mark, President and CEO of The WW (Weight Watchers) Group Inc., agreed that making the program even more affordable will make a difference to HAP HMO members.
"HAP is providing its members with a great incentive to get healthy by participating in a proven program – Weight Watchers,” said Mark. “This is not only a great way to promote healthy living among Michigan residents, but also a chance for people to take control of their lives by eating properly and exercising.”
Members are required to attend 10 of 12 meetings during a session. Those who do can join as many as four 12-week sessions for $25 per session.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 62 percent of Michigan adults are overweight or obese. Obesity is linked to chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and certain types of cancers.
At the press conference, Mark brought along Weight Watchers Chef Tim Cikra to lead a cooking demonstration for HAP employees, showing just how easily busy people can prepare a nutritious meal.
HAP HMO members can enroll in Weight Watchers by calling (888) 3-FLORINE or online at www.8883florine.com using their HAP HMO identification number. Members also can show their HAP card at any Weight Watchers® meeting location to enroll.
