Susanne Mitchell, Esq. is Director of the UAW Social Security Department. The department provides professional advice and technical assistance in designing and implementing collectively-bargained benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance plans; pensions and 40l(k) plans; life and disability insurance; supplemental unemployment benefit (SUB) plans; and other jobs and income security protections.
First hired into the UAW Accounting Department in 1998, Mitchell administered pension, legal services and SUB plans. She joined the UAW Legal Department staff as an associate general counsel in 2008, focusing on Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) work, including pension and welfare plans, SUB plans and health care reform.
Before working with the UAW, Mitchell was employed as a public accountant and in private legal practice with a focus on marital estate valuations and Qualified Domestic Relation Orders (QDROs). She also served five years as an attorney for the UAW Legal Services Plan.
She graduated from Walsh College with a degree in accounting and earned a juris doctorate in 1990 from Wayne State University Law School in Detroit, completing both degrees while a clerical employee of the UAW.
Mitchell was appointed to the HAP Board in 2013.
