7 Reasons Why I'm Running a 10-Mile Race (Even Though I've Never Before)

I’m not a natural athlete – in fact, natural klutz is a more apt description. And, I usually only run when someone is chasing me. So why did I sign up for the CrimFit Training program and commit to running the HAP Crim ten-mile race in Flint this August?

When I signed up, I was asked to choose from a list of reasons why I was joining: 

 

• activity with existing friends
• make new friends
• improve overall health
• improve running/walking performance
• weight loss

I pondered my response because I realized all these reasons apply. Plus, I had a few more:

• I want to promote and support HAP’s sponsorship of the HAP Crim Festival of Races.
• I want to do something this summer that’s just for me.

Like a lot of women, I instinctively want to take care of the people around me. I’ve spent the better part of the past five years focused primarily on others. I supported my husband of 25 years through almost three years of cancer treatments. Then, after he passed, I helped our family get through the first year of grieving.

I've spent the last year-and-a-half building a new relationship with an amazing man. We’ve been having lots of fun, which means lots of food and drink. And not a lot of formal exercise outside of playing a few rounds of golf – so my weight is at an all-time high. Thankfully, I’m with someone who reminds me daily that beauty is not all about how I look and what size jeans I wear, but who I am inside. He’s teaching me how important it is to take care of myself first. He’s not interested in running the Crim, but he’s totally on board with me doing it and he’ll be cheering me on from the sidelines come August 24th.

I'll also be 56 years old at the end of June. And unless I have a period between now and then, my doctor says I will officially be in menopause. I’ve already experienced a couple of the classic symptoms. Most notably an alien spare tire wrapped around my mid-section. Sadly, the days of an effortlessly flat abdomen are behind me. My doctor and I agree that being more active is a good idea both from a weight management perspective and just plain and simple better health.

So, while those are all certainly reasons enough, I have a feeling these next four months will reveal several more.
