Dan E. Champney
Deputy General Counsel
Champney joined HAP in July 2011 as vice president, Associate General Counsel. Immediately prior to joining HAP, he was in private practice and owned his own firm in Grand Blanc, Mich. He specialized in advising clients on the Affordable Care Act and other recent health law developments.
Prior to operating his own firm, Champney served 25 years as vice president and general counsel for HealthPlus, where he provided executive leadership for the legal, human resources, labor relations, strategic planning and compliance departments. In joining HealthPlus, he was the first attorney to serve in-house in a Michigan HMO health plan. HealthPlus merged with HAP in February 2016.
In 2012, Champney was the recipient of the Ellis J. Bonner Outstanding Achievement Award, the Michigan Association of Health Plans’ highest honor. This recognition was in response to a career providing guidance to health plans and the health plan association.
A lifelong Michigan resident, he holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan-Flint and a juris doctor from Wayne State University Law School. He is the past chair of the Michigan Association of Health Plans Legislative Committee. He has been a frequent speaker at the Michigan Institute for Continuing Legal Education Health Law Conference.
Champney has served on the boards and committees of the Whaley’s Children Center and Flint Institute of Music. He currently serves as a board member of the Flint Cultural Center, including the Whiting Auditorium and Sloan Longway Museum, Planetarium & Automotive Gallery.
