A New Year greeting from our
President and CEO Francine Parker

Happy New Year to All!

Time marches on as we look forward to 2008. And as an employer, HAP understands the value of time to a business. We know your time is money and you want to spend it on strategies that work. The same kind of strategic focus you apply to the health of your business, HAP offers for the health of your employees.

Creating a wellness culture in your business will result in less absenteeism, higher productivity and an engaged workforce.

HAP knows how to manage disease as well as prevent it and for the past five years our worksite wellness programs have been built upon evidence-based strategies.

In 2008, you can depend on HAP to continue to bring state of the art, health and lifestyle education directly to your employees. We are proud of our commitment to facilitate workshops and health fairs to educate and empower your employees to strive for a better health status.

Today more than ever, dependability and commitment are crucial components in maintaining successful partnerships.

Together we can really make a difference.

Health and prosperity,
Francine Parker

A Message from the HAP Wellness Team

For many people, the New Year brings a sense of renewal and hope for the future. They commit to goals or resolutions that will improve their health or lifestyle. In fact most Americans (88 percent in a 2001 GNC poll), make at least one resolution, most of which are health related.
To help you succeed with your resolution, see our Wellness by the Month flyer.

See also 20 Healthy New Year resolutions for kids.

Whether you are motivated to quit smoking, eat healthier, or exercise more, HAP has a worksite program for you.

Worksite Wellness Trends:
Focus on the Value of Health

Companies with effective wellness programs are shifting their focus from the cost of health care to the value of health. Today’s reality is that investing in health not only controls expenses, but also protects supports, and enhances “human capital.”

A recently published Watson Wyatt survey found that companies with effective wellness programs achieved 20% more revenue per employee and had health care cost increases that were:

  • 5 times lower for sick leave;
  • 4 ½ times lower for long-term disability;
  • 4 times lower for short-term disability; and
  • 3 ½ times lower for general health coverage.

These companies are connecting employee health to company goals. The survey also found that an increasing number (46%) of employers offer financial incentives to encourage workers to monitor and improve their health. By 2009, that number is expected to surpass 70%.

Health Topic of the Month –
Weight Management

If weight management and healthy eating is at the top of your list, we are promoting several of our programs that may help you and your employees along the road to health. Don’t let the cold weather put a damper on your fitness goal. Consider one of the following free programs:

HAP Featured Programs

iStrive for Better Health – First take stock of your general health with this on-line health risk appraisal program and earn rewards. Then enroll in one of seven healthy lifestyle programs including weight management, nutrition improvement, and stress management, smoking cessation or chronic disease, back pain and diabetic management. HAP members can access iStrive by visiting our website at www.hap.org.

Weight Wise at Work – Two one and one-half hour on-site sessions featuring Zonya Foco of PBS’s Zonya’s Health Bites. Learn healthy eating and cooking habits through Zonya’s zany entertainment. The program includes a copy of Zonya’s cookbook, free to HAP members, (and only $15.00 for non-HAP members.) HAP requires a minimum of 125 pre-registered participants in order to conduct an onsite session.

Walk for Better Health – Take a winter wonderland walk and enjoy some fresh air. HAP will help you coordinate a self-paced walking program for you and your employees that incorporate fun and friendly competition. HAP will provide up to 100 pedometers and all program materials – everything you need to help participants reach their activity goal. (Don’t forget to walk the mall for those post- holiday sales).

Weight Watchers at Work – HAP HMO members can join Weight Watchers within the HAP service area for just $25 and HAP will pay the rest. Members who attend 10 out of 12 meetings during the previous session can rejoin for $25 per 12-week session, for up to four sessions. Contact Weight Watchers to set up an “at work” program at your site.

Workshop with a Dietitian or Exercise Physiologist – Learn about trans fats, omega 3’s and 6’s, and how to properly read a label. Find out if one diet better than another? Get this and other questions answered by one of our nutrition experts. Combine healthy eating habits with proper exercise routines to maximize results. Learn this and more from our experts. (Minimum of 25 participants)
