Medicare Part D Subsidy

If you have limited income and resources, you may qualify for extra help with the costs for your prescription drug coverage. The amount of extra help depends on your income and resources. If you qualify and join a HAP Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage or Alliance Medicare Rx, your premiums and copayments may be less.

How does the extra help from Medicare affect what I pay for prescription drugs?

If you qualify for extra help, your costs for prescription drugs will be one of the following, depending on the amount of extra help for which you qualify:

  • $0 for generics and brands that are treated as generics; $0.00 for brand name drugs
  • $1.10 for generics and brands that are treated as generics; $3.20 for brand name drugs
  • $2.25 for generics and brands that are treated as generics; $5.60 for brand name drugs
  • 15% co-insurance for all drugs

In addition, there is no “coverage gap” for people who qualify for extra help.

What about extra help for my premium costs?

If you qualify for extra help, Medicare may pay some or all of your Part D premium. The extra help is only for Part D prescription costs, not for medical benefits. The table below summarizes the total premiums for HAP and Alliance plans based on the level of extra help you receive:

How does HAP know the level of extra help I am receiving for prescription drug costs?

We use the most current information available to us. This is known as the “Best Evidence Available.” When our information or your level of extra help changes, adjustments will be made to ensure that the plan and you share all prescription drug expenses appropriately.
