2010

Best Practices in Health Care Consumer Empowerment and Protection
HAP's Medication Therapy Management Program (MTMP) was selected as one of 30 finalists for the Best Practices in Health Care Consumer Empowerment and Protection Awards by URAC, the nation's leading accreditation organization. URAC will honor the finalists during their 11th Annual Quality Summit, October 5-7, 2010 in Chicago, IL. HAP's MTMP was selected by a distinguished panel of judges out of entries from across the nation. "The Annual Quality Summit provides a unique opportunity for leaders in health care to learn what premier companies are doing to advance consumer protection and empowerment," said Alan P. Spielman, president and chief executive officer of URAC.


Highest in Member Satisfaction – Three Years in a Row
Health Alliance Plan members once again rated HAP "Highest in Member Satisfaction among Commercial Health Plans in Michigan," in the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Member Health Insurance Plan StudySM. The study looked at Overall Experience, Coverage and Benefits, Provider Choice, Information and Communication, Claims Processing, and Customer Service. Macomb County Chamber Honors HAP Leaders
Don Kiefiuk, HAP vice president, was installed to serve as the chair of the Board of Directors of the Macomb County Chamber as it begins its 118th year.  Jamie Spriet, HAP vice president, was honored as Member of the Year for "astounding service" on the Marketing and Programs Committee and sponsorship of several Macomb County Chamber and Foundation events. Macomb County Chamber's mission is to create a positive and sustainable business environment throughout Macomb County. Through volunteerism, civic organization partnerships and community initiatives, HAP is addressing the social, economic and educational issues that affect the health of the communities we serve. HAP's rich culture of community stewardship begins at the top with a team of executives who serve on boards for a wide variety of organizations and community groups.

"Highest in Member Satisfaction"
For the second consecutive year, HAP ranked "Highest in Member Satisfaction among Commercial Health Plans in Michigan," in the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 National Health Insurance Plan StudySM.  It is an honor for HAP to receive this award for a second year. The study measures seven key drivers of satisfaction within the members' overall health plan experience: Coverage and Benefits; Provider Choice; Information and Communication; Claims Processing; Statements; Customer Service; and Approval Processes.*

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for HAP's In-Home Care Program
Caring for a seriously ill loved one can be a full-time job for family members. HAP's In-Home Care Program (HIHCP) eases the round-the-clock responsibilities for family caregivers by providing in-home care at no extra cost to HAP members facing serious, complex illnesses. In partnership with Henry Ford Community Care Services, @Home Support and St. John Home Care, HIHCP prevents and relieves suffering and improves members' quality of life through physician and nursing visits, spiritual care, nutritional counseling, social services and in-home health aides as patient and family needs change. The program reduces the need for hospitalization and emergency visits while helping patients gently transition into the next phase of their illness.

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for Improving Antidepressant Medication Compliance with Informed Decision-Making
Depression is one of the most difficult chronic conditions to treat. Patients diagnosed with depression are more likely to recover when they receive appropriate, timely follow-up care and take their antidepressant medication. HAP has increased adherence to depression treatment plans through extensive outreach to members and their health care providers, offering a 90-day refill option on antidepressant medications, and intervening quickly when members do not refill their medication. Members save money as a result of the discounted medication co-pay, and participants have reported an improvement in work attendance and productivity.

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for Senior Splash Bash & Moms in Motion Free Community Water Aerobics
After learning that certain populations within Detroit were not taking advantage of available aquatic recreational opportunities, HAP took action, launching a free water aerobics program at four Detroit recreation centers. Built around the proven health benefits of water aerobics, HAP's Senior Splash Bash & Moms in Motion program has expanded to 18 sites in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Genesee counties and has an average annual attendance of 2,640 adults. The program provides new resources to struggling recreation programs while creating opportunities in other communities. In February 2009, Clinton Township reported a 400 percent increase in attendance by seniors during its HAP-sponsored sessions.


2009 National Health Information Award
The HAP Weight WiseSM Participant Guide received a Silver Award in the 2009 National Health Information Awards. In its 16th year, the National Health Information Awards program honors high-quality consumer information. The awards program is organized by the Health Information resource Center, a national clearinghouse for consumer health programs and materials. A panel of health information experts judges entries based on content, format, success in reaching the target audience and overall quality.

National Mature Media Award
HAP's 2009 Prime Time Living Calendar received a Merit Award from the National Mature Media Awards -- the largest program of it's kind to recognize the nation's best advertising, marketing and educational materials produced for older adults. National sponsors include The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, the leading voice on aging issues for Area Agencies on Aging. Senior marketing and communication experts judge entries based on content, format, success in reaching the target audience and overall quality.

The Michigan Chronicle selected Maurice McMurray, senior vice president and general counsel, and Ron Stallworth, associate general counsel and vice president, Legislative Affairs as "Men of Excellence" who motivate and inspire others through their vision and leadership, exceptional achievements, and participation in community service.

AHIP Foundation 2009 Community Leadership Awards
HAP's Senior Splash Bash & Moms in Motion water aerobics program received an Honorable Mention by the America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) Foundation. This annual program pays tribute to health plans demonstrating excellence in community outreach by identifying a specific problem in the community, establishing creative approaches to address the problem, and successfully leading community partnerships toward collaborative solutions. Each year, HAP's Senior Splash Bash & Moms in Motion classes reach an average of 2,640 adults, with an average daily attendance of 271 participants. Classes are free and open to the general public. Mary Beth Bolton, MD, Named "Woman Physician of the Year" by Michigan State Medical Society
Dr. Bolton, HAP senior vice president and chief medical officer, and a Detroit internal medicine specialist, was recognized by her physician peers at MSMS for her career-long commitment to improving primary patient care through increasing access, promoting wellness and reducing racial and ethnic disparities. At HAP, Bolton is responsible for establishing health care policy, chronic disease care and quality programs, as well as designing and implementing innovative programs that provide the best health outcomes for HAP members.  She is also involved in community collaborations working to improve health care.

Top-Ranked Medicare HMO Plan in Michigan and Top 25 in U.S.
HAP's Medicare HMO is the top-ranked Medicare HMO plan in Michigan, according to the list of America's Best Health Plans in the November 17-24 issue of U.S. News & World Report. HAP Senior Plus was ranked 24 among 216 Medicare health plans nationwide in customer service, preventive services and treating illness. HAP's commercial HMO is also one of America's Best Health Plans, with a ranking of 38 out of 245. The America's Best Health Plans list was created by the U.S. News Media Group, in collaboration with the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

Hospice Of Michigan Crystal Rose Award: Outstanding Community Partner
HAP's In-Home Care program was honored for partnering with Hospice of Michigan to pioneer innovative health care options for those suffering with chronic illness. The award was presented at the 2008 Crystal Rose Ball in Dearborn. The HAP In-Home Care program provides in-home care at no extra cost to members facing serious, complex chronic illnesses. It prevents and relieves suffering, improves quality of life and eases the round-the-clock responsibilities for family caregivers.

Michigan Association of Health Plans Pinnacle Award for HAP's HealthTrack: A High-Tech, High-Touch Approach to Chronic Kidney Disease Management
The program targets HAP members with diabetes and hypertension to identify high-risk members, increase screening, provide health coaching and offer resources to members and their physicians to help them manage their chronic kidney disease and prevent serious complications. The Pinnacle Awards were established in 2001 to recognize innovation in Michigan managed care and recognize the dedicated individuals who are committed to improving the health of their members and their communities. The panel of judges represented health care, government, small business and the media.

In July 2007, HAP partnered with these two established weight management programs to reduce the costs associated with weight loss programs and empower HAP members to eat smart, keep moving and stay healthy for a lifetime. The Pinnacle Awards were established in 2001 to recognize innovation in Michigan managed care and recognize the dedicated individuals who are committed to improving the health of their members and their communities. The panel of judges represent health care, government, small business and the media.

National Kidney Foundation of Michigan 2008 Innovations in Health Care Award
At its 10th Annual Champion of Hope Tribute Dinner, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan honored HAP for improving the lives of Michigan residents with diabetes, kidney and cardiovascular disease. HAP's HealthTrack, a high-tech, high-touch program identifies chronic kidney disease early in patients with diabetes and hypertension, the two leading causes of kidney disease. Nurse case managers help these members set goals, learn more about their conditions, get essential tests, medication, specialty care and greater self-motivation to manage their disease.

National Safe-Rx Award for e-Prescribing
The Safe-Rx award is presented annually by SureScripts, representing the nation's community pharmacies. States are ranked by the number of prescriptions routed electronically as a percentage of the total number of prescriptions eligible for electronic routing. Michigan's ranking jumped from tenth to fifth, due in large part to the successful partnership between HAP and the 800-physician Henry Ford Medical Group. The initiative was launched in 2004 at the request of the Big Three automakers - General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor Company and Chrysler, LLC - to cut prescription costs and improve quality.

Michigan Quality Award
The Michigan Quality Council awarded HFHS and HAP the "2007 Quality Leadership Award," the highest honor for organizational performance in the state-- Michigan's version of the Baldrige Award. All HFHS business units, including HAP, participated in site visits. The application process for the national Baldrige Award is a multi-year journey, so to get a state level site visit and an award on our first try is truly an accomplishment and acknowledgement of our hard work.

NCQA Recognizing Innovation in Multicultural Health Care
HAP was one of nine health plans nationally to receive a "Recognizing Innovation in Multicultural Health Care" award from NCQA for our Addressing Disparities in Breast Cancer Screening Initiative. A coordinated outreach program completely eliminated the disparity between Caucasian and African American women in getting timely mammograms.

HAP received "Excellent" accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for three years for our Commercial and Medicare HMO. HAP received a perfect score on NCQA's review of behavioral health standards.

Area Agency on Aging Corporate/Business Leadership Award
HAP received the AAA 1-B Corporate/Business Leadership Award for HAP's HealthTrack Chronic Care Management Program in recognition for improving the quality of life of older adults through the integration of disease management and community support in partnership with the AAA 1-B. Community support included prescription assistance programs, assisted transportation, homemaking and personal care services in the home, and personal emergency response equipment. The partnership was a result of a federal grant opportunity through the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Administration on Aging provided participating seniors with tools and services to improve their health and maintain their independence.
