HAP Contracts with Upper Peninsula Health Plan to Bring High-Quality Providers to PPO Customers

MARQUETTE, Mich., March 4, 2008 – Health Alliance Plan (HAP), one of Michigan's largest health plans, has secured a contract with Upper Peninsula Health Plan (UPHP) that will give employers and individuals new options in affordable, high-quality health care through 14 hospitals and 800 physicians across the Upper Peninsula.

"We're excited to work with the Upper Peninsula Health Plan to increase access to affordable health care solutions in this region," said Francine Parker, HAP President and Chief Executive Officer. "HAP's growing provider network and insurance product portfolio brings much-needed competition in statewide health coverage. We're looking forward to creating strong relationships with providers, businesses and community leaders that will drive quality improvement."

HAP's agreement with UPHP enables PPO members to access the following hospitals:

  • Baraga County Memorial Hospital
  • Bell Memorial Hospital
  • Dickinson County Healthcare System
  • Grand View Health System
  • Helen Newberry Joy Hospital
  • Iron County Community Hospital
  • Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center
  • Mackinac Straits Hospital
  • Marquette General Health System
  • Munising Memorial Hospital
  • Ontonagon Memorial Hospital
  • Portage Health
  • Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital
  • War Memorial Hospital

HAP is known as an industry pioneer; helping to launch e-Prescribing that has saved millions of health care dollars, and being the first in Michigan to introduce an IT-based disease management registry for patients with chronic illnesses. The nonprofit health plan serves more than 545,000 members and has among the lowest administrative overhead in the country – with nearly 92 percent of every health care dollar going directly toward the provision of patient care – as well as best-in-class customer service and claims processing.

"The Upper Peninsula Health Plan is happy to have such a high-quality, innovative health care company in the Upper Peninsula," said UPHP President and Chief Executive Officer Dennis H. Smith.

Companies soon will have access to innovative PPO plans, the fast-growing SOLO Individual Plans, Alliance Medicare Rx Prescription Drug Plans (stand-alone PDP) and Alliance Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap plans).

Health care providers who are interested in contracting with HAP may contact Deborah Withrow, Vice President of Strategic Relationships, at 313-664-8379 or email answers@hap.org.
