HAP Helps Moms, Seniors Splash Their Way to a Healthy 2008

Free Water Aerobics Program Kicks off in Five Cities this January

DETROIT – December 4, 2007 – Mothers and seniors around Metro Detroit can get a free fitness boost for a healthier New Year, thanks to Health Alliance Plan's Moms in Motion and Senior Splash Bash free water aerobics program. Beginning in January, classes will be offered in five southeast Michigan communities with indoor pools: Clinton Township, Detroit, Southfield, Troy and Warren.

Moms in Motion and Senior Splash Bash classes give seniors a low-impact, calorie burning workout and help mothers get in shape to keep up with their kids and have energy to spare to take care of themselves.

"For many mothers and seniors, staying active is a challenge, and we are pleased to provide this opportunity for them in a safe and convenient environment at no cost," said Chrystal Roberts, HAP's director of community relations.

While the program targets mothers and seniors, any adult may participate, Roberts said. Classes are not limited to HAP members.

"When HAP launched this program in 2004, we didn't expect it to be as popular as it has grown to be today," said Roberts. "Participants across metro Detroit are so pleased with the program that they have asked us to bring it back for another season."

Physical activity can help reduce the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, depression, colon cancer, and premature death.  Water aerobics can be ideal for just about anyone because the buoyancy of the water reduces the stress on joints, bones and muscles, and participants can burn calories more efficiently than in traditional workouts.

Classes will be held at the following locations:
