We would like to take this opportunity to revisit with you about the importance of lipid profile testing for your patients with high cholesterol, coronary heart disease, and diabetes mellitus.

All these patients should have lipid profile tests performed at least once a year and also within 60 days following a major cardiovascular event. Clinical practice guidelines, for the patients described above, recommend that these patients have their LDL levels targeted to <100 mg/dL. Other treatment endpoints are given as HDL >40 mg/dL for men, >50 mg/dL for women, and triglycerides <150 for both men and women. Statins are the usual medications used to achieve these goals, although additional drugs may be necessary to reach these targets.
