Depression and Medications

Today, there are a number of treatments that are very effective in reducing the severity of the symptoms of depression. You and your doctor can choose the right treatment for you.

Will Antidepressant Medications Help?

Antidepressant medications can be useful in correcting the chemical imbalances that may cause major depression. They work by increasing the amount of chemicals in the brain in order to restore the chemical balance.

Side Effects

These medications affect people in different ways, but side effects are generally mild and get better over time. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you are experiencing any of the following side effects:

  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Sleeping Problems
  • Bladder problems
  • Sexual problems
  • Blurred vision
  • Agitation
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Antidepressant Medication Tips

While antidepressant drugs are not habit-forming or addictive, your doctor will need to check the dosage and its effectiveness regularly. Remember that you may be on the medication for one year or even for a lifetime. For best results:

    • Be patient! It may take 4-6 weeks or longer for you to get the full benefit of the medicine.
    • Keep taking your medication until your doctor says to stop, even if you are feeling better.
    • Take different medications at the same time only with approval from your doctor.
    • Tell your dentist or any other medical specialist who prescribes a drug that you are taking antidepressants.
    • Avoid alcohol because it reduces the effectiveness of antidepressants.

Important Reminders for People Taking Antidepressants

    • Keep your doctor's appointments and review your medications and progress regularly.
    • Do not drink alcohol or take other medicines that make you sleepy.
    • Keep all medication out of reach of children.
    • If you think you may have taken an overdose of this medicine, call your doctor immediately.
