Exercise and Mood
Research has demonstrated a solid link between exercise and a positive state of mind. And it's not necessary to exhaust yourself to gain emotional benefits. Experts believe that exercise produces chemicals in the body that ease depression. Some people also get an emotional boost from "taking charge" of their health and fitness.
People who exercise often say they:
- Are able to think more clearly and are better able to handle stress
- Are less bothered by medication side effects; in some cases, their dosage may even be reduced, since their bodies can more effectively absorb medication
- Are perceived as looking less depressed; their body language - ability to maintain eye contact, posture, blank look, etc. - has improved
- Pay more attention to clothes, grooming and personal surroundings.
- Have increased energy
Getting started
Don't view exercise as a "quick fix"; choose something that you enjoy, and you'll have a better chance of sticking with your program. Start out slow and easy, and develop your stamina and skill over time. (Always check with your physician before starting any exercise program.)
