Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
Heart failure. Hearing those words can be scary…and misleading. "Heart failure" means that the heart is not working as well as it should. Heart "failure" occurs when the heart's pumping power is reduced. Most often, it is caused by weakening of the heart muscle, leaving it unable to pump enough blood. In heart failure there is less oxygen available in the body so energy levels decrease. Fluid build-up results from less blood flow to the kidneys, so people with heart failure may gain weight because of retaining extra fluid.
